One of the most popular casino games is roulette. The popularity of the game is evident from the fact that it is found in all casinos whether online or land-based; the game also has been featured in many movies. Within roulette there are several different types like American roulette, European roulette, and French roulette of which the European version of the game is most popular among the players. Roulette dates back to hundreds of years ago and its history is a fascinating one which is full of mathematical genius and thrills.

It is the French roulette from which the other forms of roulette originated. Roulette originated in the 18th century in France. It was Blaise Pascal, a famous mathematician who was created the famous roulette wheel. During his search for a perpetual motion machine in the 17th century, he accidentally invented the primitive form of the roulette game. It is believed that this popular game is a mixture of different kinds of English sports which also makes use of a wheel like Reiner, E.O., Roly Poly and Ace of Hearts. There are some other people who believe that the origin of roulette can actually be traced back to the different Italian board games like Hoca and Bribi.

One of the earliest evidence of the present form of the game can be found in a French novel by writer Jaques Lablee. However, roulette was frequently banned even in the early days; one of the reasons for this was its risky nature. There are evidences that in early Quebec, roulette along with Hoca, Dice and Faro were banned.

The version of roulette created by Pascal was popular till 1843 after which time, two Frenchmen from Homburg, Louis and Francois Blanc introduced a revised version of the game. It was during this time that another “0” was added to the live roulette wheel so as to give the other casinos a tough competition.

It was during the 1800s that the game of roulette began to spread in different parts of Europe as well as America. Soon the simplicity and the thrill made the game extremely popular among the gamblers. When the gambling was banned in Germany in the 1860s, the last legal casino of Europe was moved by the Blanc family to Monte Carlo which went on to become one of the most favored destinations in Europe for gamblers. Still today roulette is one of the most refreshing casino games and with the coming of the online roulette games its popularity is increasing even more.
