About Roulette

The popular casino game roulette, can be traced back to 18th century France. However, it was Blaise Pascal who first introduced a primitive version of the game in the 17th century. It was Blaise Pascal who actually laid the main groundwork for roulette.

According to many people, the roulette wheel is inspired by several wheel games like Reiner, Roly Poly, E.O. and Ace of Hearts from England. Some Italian games have also said to have their influence in the development of roulette. The modern form of roulette was first played in France in the late 18th century. The popularity of the game even during that time is evident from the fact that it was featured in Jaques Lablee’s novel “La Roulette, ou le jour”.

Eventually the game began to spread from France to the US. During the first half of 1800s, the game became extremely popular throughout the US and Europe and were available in most of the famous casinos. It was in Germany that the popular European version of roulette was created. The popularity of roulette in Germany gave rise to fierce competition between the different casinos. As a result, two brothers, Franco Blanc and Louis Blanc came up with a unique idea. They decided to introduce roulette wheel with a difference, a wheel having only one zero slot. This reduced the house advantage thus giving them an edge against the other casinos.

In the late 1800s, gambling was abolished in Germany. So, the last operating legal casino in Germany was shifted by the Blanc brothers from Germany to Monte Carlo. In Monte Carlo a gambling paradise was created for the elite gamblers. It was in Monte Carlo that the single zero roulette wheel gained immense popularity and became the most favored version of roulette.

The scene was a little different in the US. Here, double zero roulette was the dominant form. Even today, in most of the US casinos, as well as in Canada, South America and the Caribbean, double zero roulette can be found in most of the casinos.
